INSTRUCTION
1. Gather the Right Tools
Before starting, make sure you have these essentials ready:
- Jack: A hydraulic or scissor jack will lift your vehicle.
- Lug Wrench: For loosening and tightening the lug nuts.
- Spare Tire or New Tire: Ensure it’s the right size for your car.
- Wheel Wedges/Blocks: Prevent the car from rolling.
- Gloves and Protective Gear: Safety first!
Having all tools at hand helps avoid scrambling during the process.
2. Find a Safe, Level Spot
Always park on a flat surface, away from traffic, and turn on your hazard lights. Place wheel wedges around the tires you won’t be changing to keep the car from rolling.
3. Loosen the Lug Nuts
Using your lug wrench, turn each lug nut counterclockwise to loosen them slightly. Don’t remove them yet—just get them loose enough to make the process easier once the car is raised.
4. Raise the Vehicle with the Jack
Position the jack under the car at a designated jacking point, typically found in the owner’s manual. Lift the car just high enough so the tire is off the ground.
5. Remove the Old Tire
Now, finish unscrewing the lug nuts and carefully remove the tire. Set the lug nuts aside, ideally in a place where they won’t roll away.
6. Mount the New Tire
Align the new tire with the lug bolts and push it into place. Screw the lug nuts on by hand first to ensure they’re aligned properly.
7. Tighten the Lug Nuts
Lower the vehicle until the new tire just touches the ground, then use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to ensure even pressure.
8. Lower the Car Completely and Finish Tightening
Lower the car completely and give each lug nut a final tightening to secure the wheel.
Final Tips for Safe Tire Changing
- Check Tire Pressure: Always check the pressure of your newly mounted tire.
- Inspect Lug Nuts: Double-check that the lug nuts are tightened evenly to prevent wobbling.
- Practice Regular Maintenance: Changing a tire yourself is a great skill, but regular inspections and maintenance at a trusted auto center like Yellow Bird will keep your vehicle in top shape.
Changing a tire can be straightforward if you’re prepared and follow these steps. With practice, you’ll feel confident handling tire changes safely at home!
