DIY Oil Change Complete Guide

INSTRUCTION

1. Prepare Your Tools and Materials

Before starting, make sure you have everything you’ll need to get the job done safely and efficiently. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • New Oil: Check your owner’s manual for the right type and quantity.
  • New Oil Filter: Always replace the filter with each oil change.
  • Wrench: A socket or box wrench to remove the drain plug.
  • Oil Filter Wrench: Helpful for removing the old filter.
  • Funnel: For pouring new oil without spilling.
  • Oil Drain Pan: To catch the old oil.
  • Gloves and Rags: To keep things clean and protect your hands.

Having everything on hand keeps you from scrambling mid-change and ensures a clean, smooth process.

2. Park Safely and Let the Engine Cool

Park on a flat, level surface and make sure the engine is off and cool before starting. This helps prevent burns and ensures the oil has fully settled in the pan. If you’ve been driving, let the engine cool for at least 10-15 minutes.

3. Locate the Oil Drain Plug

Crawl under the vehicle (a set of ramps or jack stands can make this easier) and locate the oil drain plug, usually found on the bottom of the oil pan. Position the drain pan underneath to catch the old oil.

4. Drain the Old Oil

Using your wrench, carefully loosen and remove the drain plug. Let the oil flow out completely into the drain pan, which should take a few minutes. Once drained, clean the plug and threads, and replace the drain plug, tightening it securely.

5. Remove the Old Oil Filter

Position the drain pan under the oil filter, as a small amount of oil will likely spill out when you remove it. Using an oil filter wrench, twist off the old filter. Be careful, as it may still contain oil. Set it aside in the pan and wipe the filter mount area clean with a rag.

6. Install the New Oil Filter

Before installing the new filter, apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on top. This helps it seal better and makes it easier to remove during the next oil change. Screw the new filter in place by hand until snug—no need to over-tighten.

7. Add New Oil

Locate the oil fill cap on top of the engine and remove it. Place your funnel inside and pour in the new oil. Refer to your owner’s manual for the exact amount required, as overfilling can cause engine issues.

8. Check Oil Levels

After adding the oil, replace the oil fill cap and start the engine briefly. This allows the new oil to circulate. Turn off the engine and use the dipstick to check the oil level. If needed, add a little more until it’s at the correct level.

9. Dispose of the Old Oil Properly

Pour the used oil and old filter into a sealed container and take them to an authorized disposal facility—many auto centers and local recycling sites accept used oil for safe recycling.

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter

Changing your oil regularly keeps your engine clean, lubricated, and protected from wear. Over time, oil collects dirt and debris, making it less effective and risking engine damage. Regular oil changes improve fuel efficiency, extend engine life, and help avoid costly repairs.

Final Tips for Easy, Safe Oil Changes

  • Use High-Quality Oil: Stick to oil recommended for your specific vehicle model.
  • Watch the Oil Light: If it ever turns on, check the oil level immediately.
  • Keep Track of Oil Changes: Try to change the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles or per the manual's guidelines.

Learning how to change your oil is a useful skill that saves you time and money. It might feel intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, oil changes become quick and rewarding. A well-maintained car runs smoother, more efficiently, and keeps you confident on the road!
